On February 13, 1879, the Ballina ran aground on the entrance bar of the Hastings River in Port Macquarie. By the next morning, the vessel was completely swamped and broke in two. The crew had already jettisoned the cargo in an effort to float the ship, and all passengers and crew safely disembarked.
